‘Twilight’ stays bright but Hollywood snoozes

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The latest “Twilight” movie cast the longest shadow with $16.9 million for a third-straight No. 1 finish during one of the year’s slowest weekends at the box office.

Business was dismal, with box-office tracker Hollywood.com estimating Sunday that domestic revenues totaled just $82 million. That puts it barely ahead of Hollywood’s worst haul of the year, when revenues were $81.5 million over the second weekend in September.

Once studios release final numbers Monday, this past weekend could come in as the worst of the year if revenues finish even lower.

The first weekend of December often presents a lull in between big Thanksgiving holiday releases and the onslaught of year-end blockbusters that arrive a bit later. but this big a slowdown is surprising given that there’s quality stuff out there among the top-10 films, particularly family fare such as “The Muppets,” ”Hugo” and “Arthur Christmas.”

Hollywood executives usually blame bad weekends on a weak crop of movies.

“It’s tough to blame it on the product when the product is pretty good and the films are solid,” said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “While the post-Thanksgiving weekend is typically slow, it’s not usually this slow.”

The dreary weekend comes after a relatively quiet Thanksgiving holiday at movie theaters, despite analysts’ predictions of potential holiday records because of a great lineup of films.

But more fans might be thinking twice about heading out to theaters given the new entertainment options they have with Apple’s iPad, Amazon’s Kindle products and other gadgets, along with their big-screen home setups for movies and television.

Or it could be that Hollywood has temporarily neglected its mainstay audience of young males. Dergarabedian said there’s little out there now for guys looking for thrills and laughs.

That will change in the coming weeks as Jonah Hill’s comedy “The Sitter” opens Friday, followed by a rush of action tales: Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol,” Robert Downey Jr.’s “Sherlock Holmes: a Game of Shadows” and Steven Spielberg’s “The Adventures of Tintin.”

Women and families continue to dominate the scanty business at theaters now. Summit Entertainment’s female-driven blockbuster “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — part 1″ raised its domestic haul to $247.3 million. “Breaking Dawn” added $40.2 million overseas, taking it to a tally of $341 million internationally and $588.3 million worldwide.

Coming in second again was Disney’s “The Muppets” with $11.2 million, lifting the family film’s domestic total to $56.1 million. despite good reviews, though, “The Muppets” audience was off more sharply than any other top-10 movie compared to Thanksgiving weekend.

Paramount’s family adventure “Hugo,” an acclaimed saga directed by Martin Scorsese, finished third with $7.6 million, raising its domestic take to $25.2 million.

Sony’s animated holiday comedy “Arthur Christmas” was fourth with $7.4 million, pushing its total to $25.3 million.

In limited release, Fox Searchlight’s sexually explicit drama “Shame” opened strongly with $361,181 at 10 theaters in six cities. “Shame” expands to six more cities Friday.

Starring Michael Fassbender in a grim portrait of a sex addict, “Shame” is the latest film angling to lure moviegoers despite an NC-17 rating that prohibits anyone younger than 17 from seeing it.

Some fans and theaters equate the NC-17 tag with pornography, but serious films with that rating occasionally break through and find an audience. Fox Searchlight is positioning “Shame” for Academy Awards attention after the film earned Fassbender the best-actor prize at the Venice Film Festival.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

Lea Michele Interview New Year's Eve (Video)

The minute I found out that, that the movie was being made, I almost threw up. he did one thing where I knocked on his door and he, like, opened it and he’s just wearing like a towel.

So you’ve been in most of this movie trapped in an elevator with Ashton.

So, what was that like?

I mean it was a little scary at first but he’s so great. he made me really comfortable and so, you know, I was just really thankful to get to have him to do that with.

Now, you get to do it with Bon Jovi in this movie. So what went through your mind when you found out going to happen.

Oh, I thought it was amazing. you know, he’s such an icon and I thought, not only was I excited to get to perform with him, but I think he’s so perfect for this part to play Jensen, so I was happy for the film that we got him.

And what was the experience like actually being on stage in Times Square?

That was really awesome.I mean I think that if it had actually been New Year’s Eve preforming in Times Square, it would have been really chaotic but being that we were recreating it, it was nice. I preferred a recreation of New Year’s Eve. Sure, exactly, a little less pressure that way.

Exactly, yes. Are you a big New Year’s Eve person? Is it one of your favorite holidays?

Totally. I’m a huge New Year’s Eve girl, I love it, I get dressed up, I had fun, I’m with my family. I pretty much do the same thing each year. we have our little like tradition of where we go and it’s awesome.

Are you a resolution person or or not so much?

Not so much. I think it’s just important to step into the new year with promising yourself to take good care of yourself and to continue to work hard and be happy, I think that that’s better than being, like, “I’m going to do this, this, this, this”.

Like making a list, too.

I did make one New Year’s resolution a couple of years ago which was to throw away all of my gross pajamas that I would wear at night and only wear to bed, like, beautiful like, not so much lingerie, but for myself.

I wanted to do that for me and I threw away all of my, like, old boyfriend boxers, t-shirts with stain, and have created a beautiful collection of things to wear at night. That’s the only New Year’s resolution that’s suck. the people that slept over at my house were like, “What are you wearing?!” It’s mine and it makes me feel good when I go to bed at night, and I love it, it’s the best New Year’s resolution, and I made it, like seven years ago.

Now, when people found out that I was interviewing you today I got a lot of Twitter followers who wanted to know if you can say anything about the Les Mis rumors. People are really excited about it. Oh really! I mean I just the minute I found out that movie was being made I like almost throw up that’s so exciting.

So to just be sort of considered. you know, that was my first play I was in when I was eight years old. I’m just, as a fan super excited they’re making it into. the film no matter what, so we’ll see.

Ooh, we’ll see. now tell me a little bit, too, about working with this amazing cast. I know you don’t get to share scenes with everyone in the film.

But there were some really cute outtakes at the end and I wondered who really cracked you up behind the scene?

Ashton. I mean who else! He’s hilarious. he really did one thing where I knocked on his door and opened and he was just wearing, like, a towel. And, he’s just, you know, he’s so great.

Exciting new year for comic book cartoons

Comic Book fans have much to be thankful for in the past year and a lot to look forward to in the coming year.

MANILA, Philippines — While 2011 had been a huge year for comics, the year 2012 looks to be an even bigger year.

Cartoons may seem childish to teenagers and young adults, but animated films and TV series are an effective gateway for people to get into comics. the secret to good animation is finding the balance between adapting its original source and translating the essence of a comic into the screen, taking the viewers’ mindset into consideration.

Looking back

Last October, DC came out with its animated adaptation of “Batman: Year one.’’ the film was a very faithful take on Frank Miller’s original work. the producers said it was easy to turn the comic into a cartoon because of Miller’s cinematic style of writing.

What made “Batman: Year One’’ so unique and fascinating is how it delves into the life of James Gordon. the film acts as an origin story for Batman, but it spends just as much time detailing the pressures that Gordon fights through, as he finds himself stuck in a corrupt police system. the film takes us into his personal life as well, exploring his relationship with his wife and child.

What also makes Year one thrilling is its depiction of Catwoman, especially in the bonus short film, starring our favorite cat burglar with a heart. It turns out that more than a simple desire for money and jewelry, Selina Kyle is really Ijust trying to protect the women of Gotham City.

“Thor: tales of Asgard’’ was Marvel’s 2011 animated release that tells the story of a young Thor who learns the consequences of great power, and the responsibility that goes with it. the plot is very traditional, and Thor as a character is pretty dull. but what I really appreciated was how Loki is made into such a likable, innocent, and caring brother. the end of the film foreshadows his dark future, but most of the movie has Loki aiding Thor and performing heroic tasks.

Party like it’s 2012

DC has so many animated projects in the coming year, it gets me giddy every time I think about it.

“Justice League: Doom’’ will come out early 2012. the animated film is a loose adaptation of Tower of Babel, the famous JLA storyline that had the World’s Greatest Heroes systematically beat down and humiliated by their enemies who are using Batman’s files to devise their strategies. Finding out that Batman is keeping dangerous, intrusive files on his teammates creates a rift in the team, making Batman an untrustworthy figure.

The movie has sentimental value as well. the project was Dwayne McDuffie’s last, as he wrote it right before his death in February 2011. McDuffie was the creator of Static Shock, and he also wrote and produced Justice League Unlimited.

Also in the works is an animated film adaptation of Frank Miller’s “the dark Knight Returns.’’ this is sure to either make fanboys rejoice or shake with fear. Along with Watchmen, the dark Knight Returns is considered by many as a classic to top all classics. So while the potential for such a project is mind-blowing, fans around the world will surely be critical.

I guess the best advice is for viewers to accept any animated adaptation as a separate piece of work from its original source. It’s hard to enjoy a movie when you’re constantly comparing it to the comic books. We have to look at animated films as a whole different entity. of course, that is easier said than done.

On TV, “the Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’’ will start its second season early 2012. the show boasts of an all-star line-up featuring the likes of Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, and Thor. Lesser known heroes like Hawkeye, Black Panther, Wasp and Hank Pym also play major roles in the TV series. obviously targeted at kids, adults will nevertheless enjoy the cartoon because of its fast pace, sleek animation, and big action.

There are a lot more animated comic book adaptations scheduled for 2012, so do try to keep yourselves posted on the newest releases. always buy original. either buy the original copies of the cartoon, or catch it on TV. Let’s give the animators more incentive and more reason to keep on coming back with new, progressive projects.

Happy new year to all of you, and may the force be with you!

Exciting new year for comic book cartoons

30 DAYS OF NIGHT – Perfect Halloween Reading and Viewing

Steve Niles’ and Ben Templesmith have created a monster. the highly stylized and deeply disturbing 30 Days of Night graphic novel went on to spawn various sequels and a big screen feature film, as well as a TV mini series (Blood Trails) and an online prequel to the movie (Dust to Dust). why have the tales of Barrow and its vampire visitors proved to be such a hit with comics fans and moviegoers? the popularity of that seminal first book (made up of the three issue IDW miniseries) is understandable on several levels. Firstly, it is a rip-roaring story told with a deft use of pacing and structure. Then there is the artwork. Ben Templesmith’s stark, high-contrast artwork is exactly as bleak as the tale needs it to be, and his stylized visions of vampire carnage are extremely memorable. once you read the book, those images stay with you for a very long time. with a tight script and no padding, the first 30 Days of Night graphic novel is about as perfect as modern horror comics get.

Two direct sequels to the first book were released as the title’s popularity grew, namely dark Days and Return to Barrow. As well as these two books, there have been various other titles that tie into the 30 Days of Night mythos, namely stories such as 30 Days of Night: Bloodsucker tales, Dead Space, Spreading the Disease, Eben and Stella, Red Snow and Beyond Barrow. These works featured a variety of artists and co-writers, but were always overseen by creator Steve Niles. Niles also wrote two original prose novels based on the comics universe he created, namely ’30 Days of Night: Rumours of the Undead’ and ’30 Days of Night: Immortal Remains’.

The biggest example of how far the comics forced their way into the popular consciousness is the feature film of the first book, starring Josh Hartnett and Melissa George in the lead roles. while not perfect, the 30 Days of Night movie is a very close interpretation of the graphic novel, and the distinct art style of Ben Templesmith is reproduced very well in the movie’s cinematography. the washed out complexions of the vampires are almost translucent under the sickly lighting cast over the onscreen action. the direction, from David Slade, is mercilessly tense and captures the claustrophobic survival elements of the story very well. Receiving a mixed release at the box office, it was nonetheless one of the strongest comic book movies of the last few years.

So where next for the 30 Days of Night franchise? while details are thin on the ground regarding the future of the comics series, it would appear there is interest in more screen action from this particular set of vampires. A DVD sequel has been rumoured, along with more web content, but little in the way of concrete news is available at present. Ben Templesmith has gone on to become one of the comics industry’s leading artists, and his own title, Welcome to Hoxford, is the most promising horror comic to hit the shelves since the first 30 Days of Night. I don;t think we’ve heard the last of the vampires just yet though. Rest assured, while there is darkness, there’ll be Steve Niles and ben Templesmith lurking in the shadows, ready to scar your soul.

2012 Outlook: PGMs To Be On Defensive In Early 2012; Recovery Will Hinge On Economy

(Kitco News) – during the early months of 2012, the platinum group metals may resemble the fictional-movie boxer Rocky Balboa early in his bouts–taking punches and generally on the defensive, in this case because economic uncertainty means worries about growth in industrial demand for PGMs.

But, like Rocky, the PGMs are expected to eventually get their second wind and start fighting back. the big question will be what round this occurs in—whether it could be as early as the second or third quarters of this year, or whether it will be the fourth quarter or later.

The answer hinges on when some of the global macroeconomic worries abate, such as the European sovereign-debt crisis and a cooling in the economy of key commodities consumer China.

Spot platinum fell from $1,912.20 an ounce in August to $1,397 the end of the 2011, according to one charting service. Palladium fell from $846.75 in early August to $652.50 as the year wound down.

“We expect some weakness in the first quarter of 2012,” said Bart Melek, head of commodity strategy for TD Securities, which anticipates full-year average prices of $1,680 for platinum and $710 for palladium. “We expect demand to be less than robust (early in) the new Year.”

TDS looks for “the worst of the market turmoil stemming from the European fiscal crisis to materialize sometime in the first quarter of 2012,” with the global economic outlook deteriorating. thus, not only PGMs but other commodities could suffer early in the year due to continued capital outflows from risky assets generally. also, TDS said, any significant economic slowdown in China and other developing nations that are significant users of raw materials could be especially hurtful.

TD Securities looks for platinum to average just $1,375 in the first quarter and palladium to average $560, but then looks for improvement in each of the next three quarters. by the fourth quarter, TD Securities looks for palladium to average $825 an ounce and for platinum to average $1,800.

Several other prognosticators also look for improvement as the year wears on, although some expect a slower recovery. for instance, a Friday report from Deutsche Bank called for platinum to average $1,350 in the first quarter and $1,650 in the fourth, while palladium is expected to average $600 in the first quarter and $770 in the fourth.

“I think there is going to be a wait-and-see attitude to see how some of the economic numbers come out,” said Mike Zarembski, senior commodities analyst with optionsXpress, who looks for a slow start in 2012 for PGMs. “But once we see better figures, I think that will spur more investment into the commodities, including the PGMs. I think between the second and the third quarter, we’ll probably start to see the crux of the growth for the year.”

Economic Worries To mean Early Stumbling Blocks for PGMs

The main worry for the PGMs as 2012 gets underway is the macroeconomic backdrop that already has dented enthusiasm for these metals and other industrial commodities. the primary industrial use for PGMs is catalytic converters in automobiles.

“We expect a slowdown in demand from investors as well as fabricators,” said Rohit Savant, senior commodities analyst with CPM Group and the top forecaster for both platinum and palladium in the London Bullion Market Association’s 2011 survey. he looks for palladium to average $611 in 2012 and platinum to average $1,483.

Massive rock (designed by Pitt, aw) aside, how is the massive Jolie-Pitt family feeling about the news?

“It is a promise for the future and their kids are very happy,” Pitt’s rep tells E! News. “There’s no date set at this time.”

While Jolie adopted Maddox and Zahara technically on her own, Pitt adopted them several years ago, then they adopted Pax together and have three biological children—Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne.

This will be the second marriage for Pitt, who in case you didn’t know was previously married to Jennifer Aniston for five years, and the third marriage for Jolie, who was once Mrs. Jonny Lee Miller and then Mrs. Billy Bob Thornton.

The year in pop culture: Meet the most annoying celebrities of 2011 …

What a spring and summer we had! things kicked off with Hines Ward holding aloft the mirror ball as “Dancing with the Stars” champion, then Batman and snow came to Pittsburgh streets for the filming of “The Dark Knight Rises.”

In late spring, Harry Potter’s Hermione, Emma Watson, was in Pittsburgh filming “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” from that point and for the next few months — from mr. Ward and partner Kym Johnson’s win on May 25, to “American Idol” auditions that brought thousands of wannabes to Heinz Field in July, to “Antiques Roadshow” and the Batman film shoot that ended in August — you could argue that Pittsburgh was at the center of the pop culture universe.

Not that we’re ever far from being tops in pop, what with the Andy Warhol Museum bringing in exhibitions such as Alex Ross’ comic-book paintings, the ToonSeum expansion in the Pittsburgh Cultural District and Pittsburgh Dad becoming a YouTube sensation. this fall, Tom Cruise was roaming local streets, shooting “One Shot,” then promoting the opening last week of “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.” Suri Cruise may be the darling of the paparazzi, but our own little ambassador/angel, 11-year-old Jackie Evancho, was recently designated as a distinguished Pittsburgher by the Heinz History Center.

Also bringing international attention to the city is rapper Mac Miller, following in fellow Allderdice High grad Wiz Khalifa’s footsteps by naming songs for places many of us know, like “Blue Slide Park,” and soaring on the Billboard charts. Wiz’s hometown anthem “Black and Yellow” was the no. 1 Ringtone of 2011, according to Billboard’s Year in Music issue.

Those are just some of Pittsburgh’s contributions to pop culture in 2011. Here are other pop phenomenons of the year:

Highs and lows

People begin 2011 planking — getting on the ground face down, arms straight at sides, feet together, in public — and end it Tebowing — a la Denver Broncos prayerful quarterback Tim Tebow.

Pop culture on the lowbrow end is about how low can you go. the cry of “Winning!” by the man, er, warlock with tiger blood, Charlie Sheen, is part of an epic meltdown in front of a fascinated world that revels in human train wrecks. both #winning and #tigerblood become trending hashtags as Twitter, tweeting and trending continue a run as the three “T’s” of 21st-century pop culture.

Still on the lowbrow theme, King of Tweets Ashton Kutcher, who replaces mr. Sheen on the hit CBS sitcom “Two and a Half Men,” and Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry have “oops” moments in the same week: mr. Kutcher defends Joe Paterno without the facts; mr. Perry forgets which cabinet-level department he would eliminate if he became president.

Mr. Kutcher apologizes, and his handlers persuade him to have all tweets from here forward screened.

In an unrelated event in mr. Kutcher’s hectic life, his wife, Demi Moore, files for divorce in November.

More from the campaign trail

• to go along with his “oops” moment, a video of Rick Perry whooping it up emerges, along with a racial slur found to be written on a rock on his ranch.

• Michele Bachmann addresses the wrong camera during her tea party-sponsored response to the State of the Union address, and a “Saturday Night Live” running gag is born.

• Herman Cain’s bizarre commercial with a spokesman smoking for the camera precedes allegations of sexual harassment issued by several women. he eventually suspends his campaign.

• Newt Gingrich surges in the Republican primary polls after blasting the media during a debate.

in and out of court

• Casey Anthony is found not guilty in the murder of her daughter, Caylee. A Lifetime movie is in the works, and a costume of the accused is a big seller for Halloween.

• Michael Jackson’s doctor, Conrad Murray, is found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

• Lindsay Lohan’s in-and-out of court saga finds her doing community service at a morgue. in an unrelated move, she finishes the year with a Playboy pictorial.

• A paternity suit against Justin Bieber is quickly retracted, but the teen pop star insists on taking a DNA test to further prove he’s not a dad. he jokes, “If it was up to me, it would’ve been a better story — like Justin Bieber went off to South America with this 27-year-old supermodel. that would’ve been an awesome rumor.”

That’s entertainment

• the Harry Potter movie franchise closes its run; “The Twilight Saga” is one film from the end; and “The Hunger Games,” the next big young adult movie adaptation, offers a first-look trailer in November.

• Director Brett Ratner lures Eddie Murphy back to the big screen, scores the producing gig at the Oscars and then gets mr. Murphy to host and … blows it all by unleashing a gay slur and bad-taste rant on Howard Stern’s radio show. Riding to the rescue: Brian Grazer and Billy Crystal.

• Simon Cowell leaves “American Idol” for “The X Factor,” and the “AI” team of Jennifer Lopez (high-profile divorce!), Steven Tyler (fall from stage!) and Randy Jackson (he’s still there!) plays on.

• DC Comics reboots 52 titles and starts them at no. 1.

• so bad it’s good: Teenager Rebecca Black’s YouTube video of catchy-annoying song “Friday” goes viral and becomes the most-watched video of 2011.

• Alec Baldwin is tossed from an American Airlines flight for refusing to power down his cell phone while playing Words with Friends. he spoofs the incident on “Saturday Night Live,” where he appears as a pilot apologizing to Alec Bald… well, himself. American Airlines responds by saying it may pull the star’s TV series, “30 Rock,” from its in-flight offerings.

• Broadway’s mega-expensive musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” continues to make millions despite technical difficulties and critical drubs, and original director Julie Taymor sues for money owed.

• Sonny and Cher’s daughter, Chastity, becomes a man named Chaz Bono and ignites controversy as a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars.” Veteran J.R. Martinez wins the most recent round of the show.

• the queen of daytime talk, Oprah Winfrey, leaves the air, and 80-year-old Regis Philbin gives his last “Live!” performance. the ABC soap opera “All My Children” is canceled after more than 40 years on air, as is “One Life to Live.”

Weddings and break-ups

• in the wedding of 2011, Kate Middleton exudes class in becoming the Duchess of Cambridge and wife to Prince William. the wedding seen ’round the world also brought her sister, Pippa, to the attention of millions, while bringing sexy back to the British royal family: several websites are now devoted to the subject of Ms. Middleton’s “bum.”

• It’s revealed that Arnold Schwarzenegger fathered a child with the family’s maid, and wife Maria Shriver splits.

• Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony split after seven years of marriage, and, as the year comes to an end, US Magazine suggests a custody battle is brewing over their twins.

• Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries were wed for 72 days before Kim filed for divorce, keeping the Kardashian clan front and center in gossip circles. in Parade magazine’s 2011 pop culture poll of most annoying celebrities, Kim Kardashian (29 percent) and Charlie Sheen (27 percent) finish just ahead of “Jersey Shore’s” Snooki (21 percent).

We’ve been hearing rumors for a while that those crazy alien clowns would be back in theaters terrorizing Earth again sometime soon. now it seems all the elements have come together at last and the original creators are preparing for another Killer Klowns flick in 2012.

The Chiodo brothers (Charles, Edward and Stephen) have been talking up the possibility of a Klowns sequel at horror conventions all year, and the film just keeps getting more real. the brothers have deemed their new film a “requel,” calling it a sort of melding between reboot and sequel, and it seems the new movie is marching toward a release sometime soon.

Back in June, actor Grant Cramer (who played Mike Tobacco in the first Killer Klowns) told blogger Freddy in Space that he will reprise his role and play a kind of mentor figure to two younger characters. he also provided an update on where production was headed at the time.

“We have a script and a commitment for all our funding, but the money can’t be spent until we have a distribution deal in place, so that’s where we are—talking to distributors,” he said.

Cramer also noted that the Chiodos are putting together a new batch of Killer Klowns for the occasion. the project also has a title: the Return of the Killer Klowns From Outer Space in 3D. Check out the nifty little teaser trailer, visit the flick’s official Facebook page and prepare yourself for B-movie awesomeness.
